Lace up for CANSA run

The event aims to save millions of preventable deaths each year by raising awareness and education about the disease.

LOCAL resident and The Cancer Association of South Africa’s (CANSA) divisional manager of service delivery, Cara Noble has urged residents to get involved in this year’s five kilometre fun run, called ‘Let’s Gijima for CANSA Active’ on Saturday, 4 February. The event, held on World Cancer Day, aims to save millions of preventable deaths each year by raising awareness and education about the disease, pressing governments and individuals across the world to take action.

According to Noble 8.2-million people die from cancer worldwide every year, out of which, four million people die prematurely (aged 30 to 69 years).

The fun run starts at Bike and Bean Durban on the promenade and Noble is urging participants to dress up in fun, bright colours for the event.

“This year’s theme World Cancer Day is under the hashtag #WeCanICan. We are inviting all Durbanites to get active, healthy and have some fun with the whole family. At the same time you will be contributing to a local organisation that has been educating the public and offering support services for 40 years to cancer patients and their families.

“The fun run is aimed at creating awareness about living a healthy lifestyle and the realisation that everyone can make a difference in the fight against cancer. You can help by ensuring your family has a healthier diet, exercises regularly, applies sunscreen and volunteers. We can, you can, I can make a difference,” she said.

Registration takes place at 7am and the race starts at 8am.

Noble said there would also be prizes on the day including a new bicycle and a lucky draw.
