Dead body recovered at Virginia Beach

Members of the public spotted the body floating in the water near the shore.

A BODY of a 35-year-old man has been recovered at Virginia Beach. Members of the public contacted emergency services after spotting the body of the man floating not too far away from the pier. It’s unclear what happened to the man. Since October, four people have drowned at the beach popular with fishermen.

“At about 6pm we received a call about a body spotted floating in the sea off Virginia Pier. Members from Marshall and Netcare 911 were called to the scene where the body was found floating face down. Rescue personnel managed to retrieve the body and bring him to shore,” said Marshall Security’s Kyle van Reenen.

According to Chris Botha of Netcare 911, the man was pronounced dead on scene.

“The three paramedics who arrived at the scene raced into the surf and pulled the body of the 35-year-old out of the water. Tragically he was declared dead at the scene. Exact details as to what happened will form part of a police investigation,” Botha said.

The scene was handed over to the Durban North SAPS for investigation.
