3-year-old twins injured in Durban North fire

At this stage it is unclear what caused the blaze.

FIREFIGHTERS and various emergency personnel are currently on scene at a house fire on the corner of Hoylake Drive and Swapo (Broadway) Road. Two young children have been badly burned in the incident confirmed Marshall Security’s Kyle van Reenen.

“It’s unclear what caused the blaze but two young children, twins, who are 3 years old have been badly burned in the fire. They have been transported through to Umhlanga Hospital. A third victim, a domestic worker has also been taken through to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation,” he said.

Netcare 911 spokesman, Chris Botha, said the domestic worker also suffered minor burns in the fire.

“Paramedics from Netcare and Crisis stabilised the critically injured children before they transported them to a local hospital for the care that they required. The domestic worker sustained smoke inhalation injuries and minor burns. A Netcare ambulance crew treated her at the scene before they transported her to a Durban hospital for the care that she required,” Botha said.

Neil Powell of Crisis Medical who is also on scene said the road has been blocked off.

“There is thick smoke in the area and Broadway (Swapo) has been blocked off. There are several emergency personnel on the ground and at this stage it is unclear what caused the blaze,” he said.
