4 pupils killed in horror crash

The crash involved a mini-bus taxi and a bus in Ntuzuma.

TRAGEDY has marred the first day back at school as four school pupils were killed in a horror crash between a bus and taxi in Ntuzuma this morning. Emergency Medical and Rescue Services (EMRS) KZN spokesman, Robert Mckenzie, said it is unclear what caused the collision but said a number of emergency services were on scene.

“So far we can confirm that four schoolchildren have tragically lost their lives. Three boys and a girl were killed in the accident. Paramedics from the Department of Health’s Emergency Medical Services and multiple private ambulance services worked together to treat a total 18 people were injured in the crash. One of the patients, who was critically injured was airlifted by the KZN Department of Health’s EMS helicopter,” he said.

According to Netcare 911 spokesman, Chris Botha, the crumpled remains of the taxi had come to rest on the sidewalk about fifty metres from the bus.

“After triaging the injured it was found that four children tragically died on impact, a fifteen-year-old –boy had sustained life-threatening injuries, seven people were seriously injured while ten escaped with minor injuries.

“The critically injured patient was placed on a ventilator and after he was immobilised they airlifted him to a specialised hospital. The other patients were treated by various services at the scene before they transported them to hospitals and clinics in the area,” he said.
