Local entrepreneur celebrate sweet success

Helene Griffiths from Granny Griff's Sugar Shack was named the Umhlanga Women Achiever (UWA) of the Year for 2016 at a recent event.

HELENE Griffiths’ outstanding entrepreneurial skills, passion for social upliftment projects and her source of motivation earned her the title of Umhlanga Women Achiever (UWA) of the Year for 2016.

Griffiths was crowned at UWA’s year-end event.  Three external businesswomen were selected to judge the competition and all 22 applications were sent to the judges independently.

Applicants were judged based on various criteria including any recognition received for outstanding entrepreneurship, innovations or promotions and personal social responsibility activities over the past 12 months, their source of motivation and how the applicant contributes to UWA.

Jeanne Vogel van der Sandt, UWA President for 2016 (and past winner of the award in 2015) was delighted with the final results. Helene Griffiths, Granny Griff’s Sugar Shack (who also received a lifetime award) was placed first, Claudette Lingenfelder, Beauty Beyond by Claudette bagged second position, Kim Johnston, MDD was placed third and Martie Wilemse, Stimvak received an award for 18 years of membership.

The UWA meets on a monthly basis and is a networking organisation for women in business. The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, 8 February at Gateway Hotel. Registration is from 7.30am and the meeting starts at 8am.
