R350 000 worth of fireworks seized in bust

Local residents have welcomed the seizure of illegal fireworks.

DURBAN North residents have reacted with joy after the SAPS Durban Explosives Unit seized fireworks with a street value of R350 000 in a raid on Thursday.

A 60-year-old suspect was arrested for dealing in fireworks using an alleged fake licence.  Fireworks with a street value of up to R350, 000 was seized from the shop. The arrested suspect is expected to make his first appearance in court soon.

Local resident, Pam Naudé who is also a dog behaviourist and trainer, said she was thrilled with the news of the arrest.

“I’m thrilled with the arrest from the Explosives Unit, they were fantastic, we need more policing like this. I am sure the march that Clair Crook had in Pinetown recently had an impact. I’m over the moon with this arrest and I hope we can take a proactive stance in 2017. There was recently a court interdict granted to the Kempton Park SPCA to prevent a fireworks display in the area which is something we need. Tshwane have also made an appeal to stop a fireworks display. Loud bangs don’t only harm animals, but affect all wildlife, older people and children with special needs. People cannot continue to be irresponsible when it comes to loud bangs,” she said.

KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa appealed to shop owners who sell fireworks to comply with Explosive Act.

“Those who will be found contravening such Act will face the long arm of the law. Parents must also make sure that they supervise their children when using fireworks during New Year’s Eve,” he said
