AS the retail industry gears up for its busiest time of the year, it has also proved to be a popular period for shoplifters who try to steal thousands of rands worth of items. In the last five days, Durban North SAPS has charged 20 shoplifters.
According to Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the SAPS, the station has averaged four to five cases a day.
“At this time of the year we do see a slight spike in the amount of incidents. There is no set mall or centre for the spike, we’ve recorded cases across the policing precinct.
“Items like perfume, diapers, electronic items and clothing have been recovered in the arrests. Store detectives have been alert and have made the arrests before handing the shoplifters over to us,” he said.
According to police statistics, retailers nationally lose between R2-billion and R3-billion through shoplifting every year.
