Dumped kittens spark outrage

Seven felines were left in a box on the side of busy road with a note explaining the owner's had moved to Johannesburg.

THE North Durban community has expressed its outrage after an animal cargo box with seven felines (six kittens and a mother cat) inside of it were dumped in Umbilo. A hastily scribbled note was crudely taped to the box with saying ‘Please give them a home, owner moved to JHB’. The box was left on the road and exposed to heavy downpours last week resulting in one of the kittens dying from hypothermia, despite being rescued by local residents.

Farrah Khan Maharajh, founder of Feeding the Furballs, a non-profit organisation (NPO) which provides rescue animals and rescue organisations with food and supplies said she was horrified by the dumping.

“We’ve seen an increase of cats and kittens just being dumped like this. When one of the residents spotted the box she thought the cats were all dead inside, however, when she opened the box she found the felines soaking wet. We took them to the vet immediately but sadly after a few days, one of the kittens died because she was exposed to the elements for too long. We believe she died from hypothermia.

“Thankfully the others cats have recovered well. The vet said they would have suffered a slow and painful death had they not been rescued. We’ve managed to find homes for three of the cats and now we are trying to secure loving homes for three of them, two kittens and the mom,” she said.

Khan Maharajh thanked the community for the outpouring of support and for the funds raised to help pay for the rescued cats’ vet bills.
