Shacks discovered in Armstrong Avenue raid
The raid is part of an ongoing initiative to root out vagrants from the area, says the Durban North SAPS.
POLICE uncovered five shacks in the bushes along Armstrong Avenue in La Lucia during a vagrant raid earlier this morning. According to Capt Raymond Deokaran, the shacks were bordering several residential homes in the plush suburb. Eight people were arrested in the joint operation between the Durban North SAPS, Durban North/Umhlanga CPF and the City’s Land Invasion Unit.
Deokaran added police had found several items thought to be stolen from homes in the area.
“We have had complaints about vagrants living in the bushes, but we didn’t realise how close the informal dwellings were to residential homes until the operation this morning. We also found several items thought to be stolen, including wallets, a hands-free phone, a camera and a tablet. When questioned, the vagrants said they had found the items in the bins in the area. We also conducted several other cordon and searches including Swapo Road (Broadway).
“The raid is part of an ongoing initiative to root out vagrants from the area. Small crimes lead to big crimes. Fingerprints were taken of the men and a woman and criminal checks will be done to determine if any can be linked to crimes in the area,” said Deokaran.
During a raid last month, police uncovered a vagrant who had built a tree-house.
