Police impersonators target Durban

SAPS urge residents to be vigilant after a spate of incidents.

POLICE are investigating several cases of criminals impersonating police officers and then robbing people of money. According to Colonel Thembeka Mbhele, provincial SAPS spokesman, there have been a few cases in the greater Durban area.

“They are operating as a group wearing SAPS uniforms and approach victims with the knowledge the individuals are carrying a large amount of money. They use a specific modus operandi. They then say there has been a robbery case opened and know the exact amount of money that the individual is carrying or has withdrawn. The suspects then steal the money,” Mbhele said.

Durban North SAPS spokesman, Lt Raymond Deokaran, confirmed no cases had been opened in the policing precinct, but urged residents to remain vigilant.
