Ten killed in crashes since start of the month

MEC concerned over escalating road crash figures.

AT LEAST 10 people have lost their lives in a spate of road crashes since the start of December. This number, according to KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport Mxolisi Kaunda is worrying.

On Saturday, Mount Edgecombe resident, Andy Carrie, succumbed to injuries sustained during an accident in Musgrave. Carrie was a well-known travel blogger and socialite. He died a few hours after a vehicle crashed into his motorbike.

On Monday, four people were confirmed dead after a bus crashed down an embankment near Pinetown. Emergency personnel worked for most of the morning, extricating and transporting people from the wreckage. At least 60  people were treated for serious injuries. It is alleged that the bus driver lost control of the fully-laden bus, which rolled over the side of the road.

Kaunda said the spike in crashes posed a serious concern as his department prepared for the festive season campaign.

“We have already started intensifying our law enforcement and road safety programmes to ensure that we prevent crashes and fatalities during this festive season. We are, however, extremely concerned about the fatal crashes recorded over the weekend and yesterday,” Kaunda said.
