Passenger nabbed with millions at King Shaka

The man had packed the money in seven suitcases.

MORE than R12-million was seized from a man who boarded a flight at King Shaka International Airport on Sunday. The 30-year-old man was arrested and charged under the contravention of the currency and exchange act.
SAPS spokesperson, Colonel Thembeka Mbhele, said officers were informed that a passenger was due to board a flight to Dubai and was carrying a large amount of money.
“The passenger was going to transport the cash without declaring it at customs. Through intense investigation the members managed to trace the passenger. They approached the airline and had the passenger, who at the time had already boarded the flight, to offload all his  luggage,” she said.
The passenger had scanned seven bags, which all showed the same images of currency.
Mbhele added that the bags were opened  in the presence of the passenger and it was found to all be South African currency. The total amount seized was R12 229 200.
“He was placed under arrest and will be appearing today in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court.
