Future of murdered doctor’s pet in limbo

A Redhill animal organisation appeals for help with a cat whose future is uncertain following the murder of his owner.

THE future of a cat belonging to the 63-year-old doctor who was brutally murdered in her uMgeni Park home last week is in limbo. Dr Vajnah Banoo Mahomed’s decomposed body was found by a neighbour at her Browns Drift Road home last week. Masking tape had been wrapped around her mouth.

The motive for the murder has still not been established. Mahomed, who retired in May, worked as the district surgeon at Prince Mshiyeni Hospital in uMlazi, and worked with victims of rape, sexual abuse and domestic abuse.

Feeding the Furballs founder, Farrah Khan Maharajh, who is trying to find the cat a home, said she hoped the sad story could have a happy ending.

“If we aren’t able to find Jumbo, a domestic long hair, a home within the week he will be placed in a boarding facility. A neighbour has been feeding the cat in the meantime. You don’t need words to express grief. I can only imagine what the family are going through,” she said.
