Drunk driver smashes into police car, three others

Two doctors were among the 26 arrested in the roadblock on Saturday night.

AN alleged drunken driver who tried to avoid a roadblock on the M41 on Saturday night caused a four car pile-up smashing into a Phoenix SAPS police vehicle. The driver tried to reverse down the M41 hairpin bend and get back on the M4 when the collision occurred. He was among 25 people arrested for drunk driving, which included two doctors, at the roadblock held on the M41 going towards Gateway. The effort was a joint operation between Durban North SAPS and Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI).

According to Capt Raymond Deokaran, another driver was arrested after causing an accident near the Virginia off-ramp and was charged with drunk driving and reckless and negligent driving. This brought the total number of drivers arrested on the night to 26 and brings the overall number of drunk drivers arrested in the last six roadblocks to 83.

“It’s shocking to see the blatant disregard once again from motorists in the area. They call this the silly season but this is just ridiculous. Too many motorists are still risking their own safety as well as that of other road users by driving their vehicles after they have consumed alcohol. If you’re going to drink, then don’t drive, either take a cab or make some other arrangement to get home. Some drivers feigned ignorance saying they didn’t drink that much. A few motorists once again told us to go after real criminals,” he said.

Deokaran added there would be more roadblocks leading into the end of the year.
