Criminals target family pets

Dogs poisoned, burned during house robberies.

DURBAN North animal activist, Bianca Hauser has spoken out following the heartless poisoning of three dogs in last week.

The incidents, that took place in the Peacevale area, shocked animal lovers around the country when it emerged that the dogs were poisoned by armed men. In the first incident, three dogs were poisoned before the armed men robbed the family of not only jewellery but also demanded a firearm and cash. Later on in the day, two more dogs were found to died after consuming poisoned meat however, there were no signs of a break-in.

These incidents come two weeks after a similar incident rocked La Lucia where a dog was doused with boiling water also by robbers. Hauser said the incidents were heartbreaking.

“It’s heartbreaking but criminals have always targeted animals during these times. I’ve seen so many ways for a criminal to attack a dog,” she said.

Hauser said in some cases, dogs are stabbed or have a spray spritzed on their faces in order to disorientate them.

“I don’t want to advertise these methods but I do want to warn people about this. Sadly there isn’t much one can do but some ways to prevent your animal from falling victim is to train them to only eat from their food bowl and to sit before eating. All we can do is be alert and aware of what is happening around us,” Hauser said.
