Domestic travel on the rise

ACSA's Aviation Barometer shows a steady increase in air travel.

THE number of people travelling domestically has increased by more than three percent. This is according to the Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) who released their Annual Barometer this week. The barometer tracks growth in air travel. Passenger figures are gathered and provided are a year on year comparison, giving a snapshot of the air travel trends.

The period reviewed, covers the third quarter from July to September 2016. During this quarter, 4.98 million total arrivals and 4.77 million total departures across the network of airports was recorded.

According to the Barometer, the total arrivals and total departures figures show that passenger numbers maintained a steady increase in the third quarter of 2016 compared to the third quarter of 2015.

The standout figures are from King Shaka International Airport where total arrivals and departures were up by 8.4%, thanks to new airlines using the airport and other airlines introducing new flights.

There is a significant increase in passengers in and out of Durban’s King Shaka International Airport. Total arrivals and departures for King Shaka International were 1.3 million passengers, compared to 1.2 million in the same period in 2015, a rise of 8.4%. International flights have risen by 5.5 percent and international departures rose by 5.7 percent compared to last year and this was driven bu the warmer season in the northern parts of the world.

Regionally, arrivals and departures rose by 7.8 percent and 8.5 percent respectively.
