Redhill Cemetery shooting concerns residents

CPF chairman confirms live rounds were used after inspecting shells found at the cemetery.

RESIDENTS surrounding the Redhill Cemetery are up in arms over the firing of guns at a funeral on Saturday. When Northglen News visited the graveyard on Wednesday, we found a spent 9mm Luger bullet. Two more were found by ward councillor Pete Graham, who said residents recorded 35 shots in total fired during the funeral.

Robin Candy, chairman of the Greenwood Park CPF, confirmed live rounds had been used after inspecting the bullets.

“This is definitely live ammunition. If it had been a blank, the top of the bullet would have had no gunpowder and it would have been crimped over. The discharging of the weapons in a public space is not only dangerous but is illegal. We are not sure if the bullets were fired in the air or into the ground, but both carry life threatening risks,” he said.

Candy added that the Mvoti neighbourhood watch and the CPF have been battling for years to get the authorities to take their concerns at the cemetery seriously.
