City official nabbed

The employee was offering jobs for cash.

A COUNCIL employee found himself in hot water following his arrest for attempting to solicit a bribe this afternoon. The City’s Tozi Mthethwa said, a sting operation to nab the employee was set up after the municipality received a tip-off about the man’s ‘cash for jobs’ scam.

According to Mbuso Ngcobo of the City’s Integrity and Investigations Unit, once the information was received, Metro Police and SAPS sprang into action and the employee was arrested in Montclair.

“The suspect was caught red handed taking money from a job seeker,” Ngcobo said.

EThekwini Mayor Zandile Gumede commended the team for their good work saying the City would not tolerate any form of fraud or corruption.“The Municipality will not discriminate when it comes to arresting a person who has done wrong and brought the City into disrepute,” she said. She advised job seekers to follow the correct procedures when applying for a Municipal job. It does not cost anything to apply for a job in the City and if anyone is approached to pay to secure a Municipal job, they must immediately report it to the City Integrity and Investigations Unit. At the same time, any applicant who pays to secure a job is also engaging in an unlawful act,” Gumede said.
The City Integrity and Investigations Unit has had a number of successes recently including shutting down fake job websites that claimed to be associated with eThekwini Municipality.
