What to do if your phone is stolen

Police urge victims to have their stolen phones blacklisted and to report thefts to their local SAPS.

THE Greenwood Park SAPS are educating the public on the procedures to follow should your phone ever be stolen. This after a man was assaulted and robbed of his cell phone on Belmont Road in Effingham Heights on Sunday evening.

The victim was reportedly accosted at around 8pm after a noticed a blue VW Golf had stopped next to him.

“The unknown male in the car then approached the complainant, pointed a firearm at him, punched him and robbed him of his cell phone,” said station spokesman, W/O Leon Audh.

The suspect then sped off from the crime scene. Audh urged victims of stolen phones to log onto their phone’s accounts from a computer to change all passwords and delete any confidential information, particularly banking details.

It is also important, he said that people report stolen phones to both the SAPS and their service provider.

“Ensure that the service provider blocks the sim card and blacklists the handset so that it cannot be used on any network again. Get a blacklisting reference number from your service provider and report the incident to your nearest police station,”he said.
