Dogs most affected by firecrackers

Phoenix Animal Care Treatment said they received at least 47 calls to rescue petrified animals.

ANIMAL care organisations had their hands full over the weekend with an influx of lost and traumatised dogs scurrying to escape the big bangs. On Monday, the Durban & Coast SPCA said they had taken in nine dogs over the weekend alone.

Neeri Naidoo of Phoenix Animal Care Treatment said they received at least 47 calls to rescue petrified animals. In some of those cases, the dogs were killed while trying to get away from the loud bangs.
“We had to deal with a number of fatal and serious injuries. In the Phoenix area alone, we had close to 47 calls to attend to. It is very cruel for the animals,” she said.

Naidoo invited members of the community to spend the day with the animals after they have been exposed to fireworks. “We are inundated with these cases during Diwali, Guy Fawkes and New Year’s Day,” Naidoo added.

To drive their point home about the severity of the impact of firecrackers on animals Naidoo posted on Facebook, the heart-wrenching story of a dog they named, Mac who was hit by a car.  The post shows the distressed dog lying outside a popular restaurant in Phoenix. Mac was trying to get away from a group of youngsters lighting firecrackers.
