KZN baristas brew their way to the top

The competition was all about performance, skill and a passion for coffee, as well as being able to pour delicious coffee under pressure.

BRUCE Manning, Tinotenda Magede, Jeff Stopforth and Wency Masawi were named winners in the KZN Barista Championship, held this weekend at the Good Food & Wine Show. Hosted by the Speciality Coffee Association of Southern Africa (SCASA), the champs sees a number of coffee-making ‘experts’ demonstrate the perfect way to make a cup of java.

The competition was all about performance, skill and a passion for coffee, as well as being able to pour delicious coffee under pressure, with seven highly skilled judges watching the barista’s every move as they produced four espressos, four cappuccinos and four signature drinks, all in less than 15 minutes!

They will now take part in the South African National Championship at Gallager Estate from 7-9 May 2017, where there is everything to play for as the National Barista Champion goes through to compete at the World Barista Championships to be held in Seoul, South Korea, next year.

The World Barista Championships is the world’s most prestigious barista competition, welcoming participants from more than 50 countries who have won regional and national-level competitions to represent their domestic coffee talent on the world stage.
