Man airlifted after Rinaldo Road crash

The road had to be closed to allow the helicopter to land and airlift the patient.

A CRITICALLY injured man has been airlifted to hospital after a high impact crash at the intersection of North Coast Road and Rinaldo Road. The busy road had to be closed to ensure the helicopter could land. Three other people were injured in the accident.

According to Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha, the incident occurred at about 10am.

“Reports from the scene indicate that a truck was turning at the intersection when the panel van collided head-on with him. Exact detail to the cause and preceding events will form part of the police investigation.

“Paramedics arrived at the scene and found the driver of the panel van was still trapped in the wreckage of his vehicle with critical injuries, two of his passengers and the truck driver sustained moderate injuries. Firefighters used the Jaws of Life to free the injured man.

According to Marshall Security’s Kyle van Reenen, the driver who is believed to be in his 60s, had to be freed from the wreckage.

“The driver was critically injured and was trapped in the vehicle. North Coast Road was closed while the KZN Department of Health helicopter landed. He was airlifted to hospital and is in a critical condition,” he said.
