One of the suspects hurled a rock at the security guard in the attack at a Durban sports ground.

A SUSPECT was shot dead after attacking a response officer who was responding to an alarm activation at a popular sports club in the early hours of Sunday morning. Marshall Security’s Kyle van Reenen, said the officer was inspecting the Berea Rovers Sports Club premises on Jaco Jackson Drive when he was attacked by a number of armed suspects.

“The suspects attacked the armed reaction officer as he was attempting to leave the premises, striking him several times in the head with a large rock.  In fear for his life and an attempt to defend himself the officer discharged his firearm, striking one of the suspects. The remaining suspects fled the scene in an unknown direction.

“The suspect suffered a fatal gunshot wound and was declared dead on arrival of paramedics. An extensive search was conducted for the remaining suspects involved however they remain at large,” he said.

The officer has been taken through to hospital and was injured in the attack.

Van Reenen added when the officer tried closing the electronic gate after his inspection, he had difficulty closing it.

“As he was exiting the property, the armed reaction officer encountered difficulty closing the driveway security gate and exited his vehicle to inspect the gate when he came under attack. Closer investigation by authorities later revealed the gate had been tampered with, a wire was found to have been used to force the gate to remain open and possibly lure the officer from his vehicle,” he said.
