uMhlanga, Durban North raid nabs 10 vagrants

The raid focussed on several areas including the M4 and various roads in Durban North.

TEN vagrants were arrested this morning after a raid by members of the Durban North SAPS, the Durban North/Umhlanga CPF and Marshall Security. The raid focussed on the Beachwood Mangroves, the La Lucia taxi rank and Broadway (Swapo Road), under the bridge at Northway (Kenneth Kaunda). They also raided the bridge underpass at the uMhlanga off-ramp. Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the station, said police found several vagrants living under the bridges on the M4.

“We also found a vagrant with several golf balls and a golf club, who, when we confiscated the items, asked a CPF member how much she would pay him. A Marshall Security officer also found a framed certificate for a hole-in-one at the Beachwood Golf Course.

“The raid is part of an ongoing initiative to root out vagrants from the area. We also checked out the thickets around Beachwood but found no settlements. We have received complaints from residents in the area and though I cannot say all vagrants are criminals, we believe there is a criminal element using vagrancy in the area as a cloak,” he said.
