WATCH: GODurban! rolls into uMhlanga

CONSTRUCTION for the GODurban! Integrated Rapid Public Transport Network (IRPTN) is currently underway in uMhlanga.

The development forms part of IRPTN’s Phase 1 C9 station, which will stretch along Umhlanga Ridge Boulevard, through Meridian Drive, extending over the N2 to Bridge City in KwaMashu. It is estimated that the construction will be completed by May 2017.

The station will be located at the traffic circle on Umhlanga Ridge Boulevard. According to eThekwini Municipality’s Carlos Esteves, the commute would take approximately 30 minutes.

The aim of the project is to provide a flexible, safe, cost effective and seamless transport experience for the people of eThekwini.

Each station will be secured ( and manned by security to ensure the public’s safety). Ticket and ablution facilities will also be installed at the stations.

“Each station will be a substantial sized building, as we hope to transport several thousand people during peak hours,” said Esteves.

He said the public transport system would incorporate pre-paid system.

“Once you have paid you can jump on and off without worrying about paying. This will increase the number of passengers and the loading time,” he explained.

Esteves said the system will be ‘universally accessible‘ to all members of the public, including the disabled community who are wheelchair-bound as well as partially sighted and hard-of-hearing individuals.
