Don’t become a smash-and-grab victim

Police have urged commuters to take some proactive measures to improve their own safety.

THE M25 bridge, off Chris Hani Road, has once again become a hotspot for smash-and-grab incidents, the Greenwood Park SAPS warned on Thursday.

In the most recent incident a woman was robbed at gunpoint after the suspect smashed the passenger side window. The station’s spokesman, W/O Leon Audh assured the public that police visibility has since been increased, and a task team had been formed to “investigate and eradicate this scourge”

However, police have also urged the commuters travelling the route to take some proactive measures to improve their own safety.

1. Constantly be on the lookout for suspicious persons approaching your vehicle
2. Leave at least one vehicle space between you and the car in front of you
3. Slow down when approaching a red robot so that you do not have to come to a complete stop before it turns green to go
4. Do not leave valuables visible in your vehicle
5. Always check your vehicle’s mirrors for approaching suspicious people or vehicles
6. Always have your windows closed, especially at robots or stop streets
7. Fit your windows with smash and grab film.
8. If you do leave your window open, it should only be about a centimetre or less. This reduces the pressure to your car window if it is struck by a spark plug, therefore not allowing it to shatter easily
