1000 Women to honour Reeva’s memory

Women from different parts of the province are urged to add their voices to the fight against domestic violence.

IT has been more than three years since disgraced paralympian, Oscar Pistorius shot and killed his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in the early hours of Valentine’s Day. However, a move is afoot to honour the South African beauty.

The man formerly known as the ‘Blade Runner’ has always maintained that he mistook Steenkamp for an intruder in the bathroom of his Pretoria home during the shooting that made headlines around the world.

Pistorius was originally sentenced to five years for culpable homicide, but in November 2015, the Supreme Court of Appeal overturned his culpable homicide conviction and, finding in favour of the State, replaced it with murder.

Now the 1000 Women’s Trust will host a 1000Women1Voice luncheon to honour Steenkamp. The event will be held in collaboration with the Reeva Rebecca Steenkamp Foundation, which was launched two months ago. The Foundation strives to continue Reeva’s work in educating and empowering women and children against violence and abuse

The aim of the 1000 Women’s Trust is to create awareness of the impact of violence on women and children.

This year the Durban 1000Women1Voice luncheon will be held at the Tsogo Sun in South Beach on 3 November. Kim Martin, CEO of the Reeva Rebecca Steenkamp Foundation and Reeva’s cousin, will talk about the work of the foundation and how the ‘Reeva Pack’ that each guest will receive serves as an educational tool to empower vulnerable women.

Women from different parts of the province are urged to add their voices to the fight against domestic violence and other forms of abuse by joining in the 1000Women1Voice campaign.
