City vows to root out corruption

In August the City instituted disciplinary action in 45 cases of fraud and corruption.

THE eThekwini Municipality has vowed to root out corruption in the city of Durban. Speaking at the Executive Committee on Wednesday, Zandile Gumede, the eThekwini mayor urged all municipal officials to report any suspicious behaviour to the City’s Integrity and Investigations Unit.

“As I said in my inaugural speech, I am serious about tackling corruption in the City. This cannot be done overnight as processes have to be followed. I will report back to this committee on progress made in this regard,” she said.

In August, 219 forensic investigations were initiated after alleged fraud and corruption cases were reported, according to the Back to Basics Report.

During August, 45 disciplinary cases were instituted on fraud and corruption with seven dismissals for fraud and corruption. Furthermore, sanctions have been made against perpetrators of fraud, corruption and maladministration.
