Preview concert at jazz centre

Music students will perform in a concert at the Centre for Jazz and Popular Music.

THE Centre for Jazz and Popular Music presents the pre-recitals preview concert on Wednesday 19 October at 6pm. The candidates are Bachelor of Practical Music recital students Siyanda Zulu (trumpet), Xolisa Dlamini (voice) and Lucky Swele (guitar) as well as Bachelor of Music student Zibusiso Makhathini (piano).

Siyanda “Slash” Zulu, a trumpeter from Kwadukuza, is a part of Tutti, a band that plays a regular Sunday afternoon gig at Mamas Just Jazzin in Durban North. He is known for being a multi-instrumentalist, composer and arranger. Xolisa Dlamini is a talented vocalist and recorded artist. She is SAMA award nominee for her first album “Times”and has recorded with various artists in South Africa (including Selaelo Selota).

Lucky Swele grew up in Limpopo and loves Mbaqanga music. He is part of a trio (Ubuciko the Art) that fuses spoken word/poetry and music. Arranger, composer and pianist Zibusiso Makhathini will be performing three tunes on the night, two originals and a tune by Benny Golsen. Expect to hear compositions by as well as arrangements by the participants. In addition, the students will debut some of the material they intend performing on their recitals.
