Frustration mounts over lack of traffic enforcement in uMhlanga

Several motorists and taxis are flouting road rules around the traffic circles in uMhlanga.

RESIDENTS of Prestondale and uMhlanga have expressed their frustration at what they call ‘total lawlessness’ around the traffic circles, especially at the circle near the Millennium Bridge, which leads on to the M41. Prestondale resident, Cherylin Cliff, said she feared that if nothing is done soon, a serious accident would happen.

“I am aware that the Ridge Management Association knows exactly what is happening around the area with the traffic violations, this has now just gotten to a ridiculous state. Metro Police need to have a presence during the peak hour traffic to deter those flouting the laws.

“For example, on Millenium Bridge and at our two busiest circles on Armstrong Avenue, there are vehicles, mainly taxis, driving contra-flow and putting other motorists in danger. Very soon, there is going to be a massive accident as drivers are just blatantly disregarding on-coming traffic and at speed too,” she said.

uMhlanga ward councillor, Heinz de Boer, said as much as he shared the frustrations of residents, there was no short term solution to change the situation.

“I’ve met with the deputy head of the traffic department this week to discuss the traffic congestion in Prestondale and uMhlanga and there are plans being looked at to help the situation, but there is no short term solution. The roadworks on the M41 and on the new construction on the N2 interchange will be continuing for some time. There are a number of problems in this particular precinct.

“I’ve received several complaints from residents in the area, many of whom, blame the City, however, bad driver behaviour is to blame. I do believe better enforcement from the Metro Police will help combat the current flouting of laws. But some motorists have just become inconsiderate,” he said.
