80 left destitute after Kenville fire

The cause of the fire is unknown.

OVER 20 homes were recently destroyed when a devastating fire ripped through the Siyathuka Informal Settlement in Kenville.

According to ward 34 councillor, Bobby Maharajh, about 80 people were left destitute.

The counclillor has since made a desperate appeal to the public to assist the residents.

Maharajh said he was relieved that no one sustained any injuries.

The cause of the fire is unknown.

“Fortunately the speedy response and the sterling work of the Fire Department prevented the blaze from spreading throughout the settlement,” he said.

Maharajh said he had contacted Disaster Management prior to visiting the site.

Hampers have been delivered to the needy families, however, the community is in need of building materials to rebuild their homes.
