‘Unsettled seas’ shift shark nets along KZN coastline

Beachgoers have been urged to avoid unprotected beaches until the gear is restored.

BEACHGOERS have been urged to avoid swimming in certain beaches along the KwaZulu-Natal Coast.

According to The KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board, the recent large swells and unsettled seas have prevented staff from maintaining the shark nets – causing some of the protective gear to shift.

Bathers have been urged to avoid Zinkwazi, Blythdale, Salt Rock, Thompson’s Bay and Ballito beaches until further notice.

Mike Anderson-Reade, head of operations also encouraged bathers to consult the lifeguards before entering the water, considering the ocean’s current ‘treacherous’ condition.

He said as the issue is being experienced over the school holiday period, every effort is being made by the Sharks Board to get gear back in order and to have the protected beaches reopened as soon as possible.

The public is urged to only use the following beaches for bathing while the issue is being resolved:

North Coast: Westbrook, Umdloti, Bronze Beach and Umhlanga Rocks.

Durban: Ushaka and Addington beach.

South Coast: Isipingo, Pipeline Beach Amanzimtoti, St Michael’s on Sea, Margate Main Beach, Ramsgate and Southbroom.
