Cop fights off hijackers in shoot out

The officer thwarted the hijackers’ efforts by firing several shots in their direction.

A POLICEMAN became the target of an attempted hijacking on Mill Road in Effingham Heights last night. The officer thwarted the efforts of the three-man armed gang by firing several shots in their direction. Police said the suspects fled but not before shooting at the cop as they ran away. Three bullet holes were later discovered in the victim’s back window.

According to W/O Leon Audh, spokesman for the Greenwood Park SAPS, the gang fled in an unknown vehicle. Audh confirmed that the policeman was not a Greenwood Park member.

This follows yet another hijacking in the same area on Tuesday. Three armed men also accosted the second victim on Allenby Road.

“The men whom were armed with pistols instructed the victim to exit his vehicle without making a sound,” he said.

However, the victim managed to flee from the perpetrators, while they made off with his grey VW Polo and two cell phones. Both of the incidents occurred around 7pm, after the victims had returned home.
