Turn trendy for a cause

The La Lucia Baby House's Sheila Collins with the event organisers, Angela Fisher and Riette du Plessis and three of the babies encourage the community to support the event.

TWO dedicated Durbanites will be hosting a Pop Up Shop fundraiser in aid of the La Lucia Baby Home. Riette du Plessis and Angela Fisher have invited local businesses and designers to exhibit their work at the event.

“It all started with the pop-up shop last year in October. We invited local businesses and designers to set up shop at the Fig Tree Coffee Shop at Grace Family Church on Riverside Road. From the public we asked for a donation for the Baby Home,” said Du Plessis.

However, she said they now wanted to do more.

“We are hoping to raise a bit more for the home, and so we thought we would continue the tradition. This time the event will feature a raffle at R50 a ticket,” explained Du Plessis.

The home is currently a full house, with six babies under its care. Since its inception the home has cared for 28 orphaned, abandoned or legally surrendered infants, and has seen 16 adoptions.

“We love what Sheila and Skip are doing. It is absolutely selfless and amazing,” she said.

Collins said she was touched by the community support.

“It is great to know that we are not doing this alone. We are extremely grateful for the moral and physical support of the community,” she said.

The event will be held at the Mount Edgecombe Country Club’s Sandpiper Room on Saturday, 1 October at 9am. All of the funds raised will be donated to the home.
