Tiny tot’s garden reaps success

The community garden has 'grown' from strength to strength under the care of this year's Grade R pupils.

THE sustainable community garden started by the zealous 2016 Grade R pupils at the Ocean View Montessori School in Durban North has ‘grown’ from strength to strength under the care of this year’s Grade Rs.

Recently, the project received some support from the Grade 3 pupils of the Durban North College where they spent some time tending to the garden, which is open to the public.

“We created the garden with the idea that anyone from the community can harvest some of the fruit or vegetables, and only ask that in return they either plant some seeds or water or weed the garden. It has taken nearly a year to get this vibe going,” said co-principal at the school, Lucy Cronjé.

The tots have been spending time tending to the blooming garden every Friday.

“They have been so dedicated and hard working. They love weeding, watering and planting in the garden,” added Cronjé.

The aim of the project, which started as an ‘Adopt-a-Spot’ initiative in 2009, is to give the children an understanding of the planting and harvesting process.

“We wanted to promote the benefits of a sustainable garden and healthy lifestyle. It can be built and maintained with very little expenses,” she said.

Spinach, beetroot, Chinese cabbage, tomatoes, carrots, paw-paw, granadilla and citrus fruit are just some of the produce growing within the garden.
