SAPS hold roadblock on Umhlanga Rocks Drive

Several motorists were fined for not having a valid drivers license.

DURBAN North SAPS crime prevention unit held a cordon and search on Umhlanga Rocks Drive on Thursday afternoon. The purpose of the 45-minute operation was to fine drivers for breaking several traffic laws. When Northglen News arrived on scene, several motorists expressed anger over the traffic backlog the operation caused.

However, according to Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the station, the purpose of the operation was to check motorists’ drivers licenses and car disc licenses.

ā€œMore than 10 drivers were fined for having expired license discs as well as driving without a valid car license. One particular driver who was missing his number plate in the front of the car, feigned ignorance saying he hadn’t noticed. Today wasn’t about inconveniencing motorists, it was ensuring drivers abide by the rules,ā€ he said.

Last month, the station held its fourth roadblock in two months on the M41. A total of 48 drivers were arrested for drunk driving across the four operations.
