Dance-a-thon a thumping success

The event raised over R4 000 for its worthy beneficiaries.

THE Durban North community put their best feet forward as they took part in the Dance-a-thon fundraiser held at Northlands Primary School on Saturday.

Residents were challenged to ‘shimmy and shake’ their hips in the five-hour dance marathon, which was hosted in the hopes of raising some much needed funds for the Durban North/Umhlanga Crisis Team (DNUCT), House Of Love And Hope (HOLAH) and the Animal Anti-Cruelty League (AACL).

Belinda Hellerlé, a Durban North resident and organiser of the event said they hoped to raise R5 000 on the day.

“Today we saw people from all walks of life supporting the event. Within three hours we had nearly reached our mark with R4 200,” said Carol van Tonder, of DNUCT.

One of the oldest Durban North residents to attend the event was 84-year-old Margaret Cook.

“These are such worthy organisations that do so much for the community, and so I wanted to host an event to assist the dedicated staff and volunteers. Dancing, which is very therapeutic, I think is the perfect match to serve as a way to raise funds for these organisations. It is also something everyone can enjoy,” said Hellerlé.

Alvin Meyer, of the AACL said he was ‘blown away’ by the amount of community donations that were made on the day.

“We are also thrilled by the awareness the event brought. It has helped educate the community on who and where we are as well as what we stand for,” he said.
