uMhlanga construction site robbed

One of the suspects, armed with a handgun, held up a construction worker on site.

ITEMS valued at R40 000 was stolen from a construction site by two men, one of whom was armed with a pistol. According to Capt Raymond Deokaran, the robbery occurred at about 9pm at an site within Izinga Ridge Estate. The men approached a construction worker posted on site and overpowered her.

“She was seated in one of the trucks when the men approached her. One of the suspects produced a firearm and told her to lie down on the seat. He then placed a towel over her head and told her not to move. The men then broke the locks on a container on site and removed construction equipment.

“They took a brass cutter, a wheelbarrow and other items valued at R40 000. When the terrified construction worker got out of the truck she alerted the police. We believe the suspects used a 4×4 vehicle to transport the goods away. According to the construction worker, the men were wearing blue overalls,” he said.

Two years ago, construction sites around uMhlanga were targeted by battery thieves. At the time it was believed that scrap metal thieves are to blame.
