Matric exams set to be error-free

The Department of Education said they have implemented measures to ensure that the Matric exams go off without a hitch.

IN less than two months time over 800 000 pupils will start writing their National Senior Certificate examinations. Last year’s matrics retained an over 70 per cent pass rate.

A statement released on Tuesday said department officials would be working hard to ensure that the examinations are ‘of the appropriate standard, error-free and with no irregularities’.

The Head of Public Examinations and Assessments at DBE, Dr Rufus Poliah said there have been steady improvements in terms of equity and access.

This year the department has registered 677 141 full-time and 150 183 part-time candidates, 9 000 more than last year.

KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng have the largest enrollments with 169 769 and 112 069 respectively.

What’s more, enrollment figures showed an increased interest in mathematics.

Poliah said the department was committed to implementing measures that would ‘complement normal teaching and learning’ to improve performance.

“To avert the leakage of 2016 question papers, all storage points across the country will be audited to ensure they comply with the minimum security standards. Storage points that do not comply will not be allowed to store question papers,” the statement announced.

The examinations will commence on 26 October and conclude on November 29.
