Hollywood beckons for young film-makers

Aspiring film-makers will showcase their thrilling sci-fi film at this year's AFDA Graduation Festival.

THERE is more to the film industry than fame; just ask a group of aspiring film-makers, who are set to unveil their Sci-Fi film, ‘Grey Matter’.

The group of creative minds are working together to complete the 12-minute film as part of the annual AFDA Graduation Festival held in November.

Writer and director Julian Evans said the short film has been developing in his mind for the last year.

“Sci-Fi is a relatively unexplored genre in the student world, and so I thought ‘why not go out with a bang?'” said the La Lucia resident.

‘Grey Matter’ unfolds in futuristic Durban, where memory transfer between humans is no longer science fiction. A black market syndicate dealing in the illegal trade of neuro-intelligence is pressuring the protagonist, Ethan Murphy, a Ph.D. neuroscience student into developing a safer form of memory transfer.

He soon finds himself in an unknown part of town with his memories and knowledge rapidly fading. It then becomes a race against the clock as Ethan hopes to transfer his memories and intelligence into his 16-year-old brother, Nolan, before he dies.

Ballito’s Luke Ahrens stars as Ethan Murphy, while Ryan Miles takes on the role of his younger brother, Nolan and Kriben Naidoo plays Ethan’s best friend, Milo.

“It is exciting to imagine a world where your knowledge is a commodity,” said Hadley Potgieter, the producer and Durban North student.

She said the film would feature some scenes from an upcoming restaurant at Durban’s Station Drive.

  • The festival showcases third year, fourth year and Master’s film, television and performance graduation productions. The festival will begin on 24 November at Cinema Nouvea.
