Sweet treats for cancer awareness

Cupcakes of Hope will be hosting a National Cupcake Day 4 Kids with Cancer on 24 September.

“CANCER is primarily seen as an adult disease, however more and more children are being diagnosed,” said Durban North resident and volunteer of the non-profit organisation (NPO), Cupcakes of Hope, Michelle Manicum.

In order to help raise awareness on this prevalent, yet misunderstood disease during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in September, the NPO will be hosting a National Cupcake Day 4 Kids with Cancer on 24 September.

The aim of the event said founder Sandy Cipriano, is also to raise treatment funds for the young cancer warriors.

On the day the public will be able to make a R10 donation at any of the 63 participating malls across the country to receive a lovingly baked and donated cupcake.

Last year the event raised R1.5-million. This money, said Cipriano has helped more than 500 young patients by paying for their medical or other day–to–day expenses.

“Cupcakes of Hope also spoils patients on their birthdays and organises special ‘end of treatment’ surprises. We want to restore some of the normality in the children’s lives,” she added.

Throughout the year the volunteers, fondly named Cupcake Angels can also host additional awareness events – or a Party of Hope.
Schools, companies and individuals can also host their own Party of Hope by registering online. Once registered, they will receive a free Angel Party Pack that includes awareness pamphlets, baking cups, badges and balloons.

One of the youngest angels to join the pack is seven-year-old Camdyn Keswell who was diagnosed with a Wilms’ tumor (also known as nephroblastoma) in 2014.

The tumor is one of the most common forms of kidney and renal cancers in children. After doctors surgically removed the kidney as well as four sessions of chemotherapy Keswell has been cancer free for a year.

To celebrate the victory the young cancer survivor recently hosted a Party of Hope at his school.

Mugg & Bean has also launched its new lemon meringue cupcakes, which they will sell to raise funds for the organisation.

  • Locals will be able to support the National Cupcake Day 4 Kids with Cancer event at Gateway Theatre of Shopping as well as the La Lucia Mall. Contact Sandy on 0732086757 or e-mail via sandy@cupcakesofhope.org.
