Robber poses as municipal employee

The thief used a screwdriver to break open the front door burglar guards.

A Kenville home had been ransacked after a burglar pretending to be an eThekwini Municipality water department employee stormed the Gumtree Road home on Thursday. The suspect reportedly used a screwdriver to open the front door burglar guards, said W/O Leon Audh, spokesman for the Greenwood Park SAPS.

It is alleged that the suspect knocked on the front door at around noon. When the homeowner responded, the man claimed to be a municipal worker and said he wanted to inspect the water meter.

When the homeowner refused to open the door, the suspect began using a screwdriver to break open the burglar guards.

The woman quickly fled the scene, however, when she returned she discovered that her home had been looted. A television, various clothing as well as a watch had been stolen.

“We urge residents to be wary when someone approaches your home claiming to be employees of the municipality. We have had house robberies in  Greenwood Park and surrounding areas in the past, by suspects posing as municipal workers,” said Audh.

He warned that all municipal workers are required to be dressed in full uniform and produce an identification card when requested.

“If you are still not sure about the person’s credentials, phone the municipal offices and enquire if they have their members working in your area,” he said.
