Durban North pilot killed in China

The 33-year-old pilot was killed when his plane crashed during an air show in north-central China's Gansu province.

THE aviation world is mourning the loss of one of Durban North’s and South Africa’s finest pilots. Michel Leusch was killed while performing during an air show in north-central China’s Gansu province on Saturday morning. The 33-year-old was part of a group of South African trick pilots participating in air shows in China.

Leusch, who flew for Red Bull Fire Stars, died in the crash after his plane spiralled out of control before crashing to the ground at the 1st Silk Road International General Aviation Convention.

The Silver Falcons flew a missing man formation at the Bethlehem Air Show on Saturday in memory of Leusch. The flyover, in which the middle plane falls out of formation, was a sign of respect for the late Leusch.

Social media was inundated with messages of condolences and tributes to the local pilot. His brother, Julien, also paid tribute to the local resident saying he was an inspiration to everyone who knew him.

“You have been taken away from me far too soon…I promise to move forward with my life and live in your honour. I will look to the skies for your guidance and know you are there with me. I will strive to make you proud one day. Always and forever in my heart,” he said.

The former Northwood School pupil, was crowned world champ at the Intermediate World Aerobatic Championships (IWAC) last year becoming only the second South African to win the prestigious trophy after the late Glen Dell.
