Locals lace up for charity

This year’s SPCA Trail run saw nearly 600 runners taking part.

BAHA Men’s Who let the dogs out? fittingly echoed in the background as runners embarked on the Durban & Coast SPCA’s annual Trail Run on Sunday morning.

Nearly 600 people braved the chilly morning to support the non-profit organisation’s fundraising initiative. Runners could take part is a five or 14 kilometre race.

“We had a great turnout, and although we saw a few less entries than last year the event is still growing better and better every year,” said SPCA spokesperson, Lindsey Concer.

She said new sponsors have come onboard and the event has attracted some exciting food stalls.

“It is now turning into a small market. People can buy and enjoy delicious pancakes as they run,” she said.

The SPCA’s mascot, Dougal – also known as Durban North’s Dale Johnson – also raised over R16 000 through his fundraising initiatives for the animal rights group.

What’s more, the community treated the animals at the shelter with loads of food donations.

The aim of the day, said Concer was not only to collect funds but also to interact with the trail running community and to encourage people to visit the SPCA’s facilities.

“There are still some people that don’t know we are here, so this is a way to showcase our site and to encourage people to visit the animals in our kennels,” she added.
