Flood damage still a major concern

Durban North residents are outraged that City officials have not attended to the massive crater at the corner of Davallen and Marion Avenue.

CONCERNED Durban North residents have turned to social media to express their discontent with the rate at which the City officials have been responding to the damage caused by the July torrential rains.

The residents specifically highlighted the massive crater that was created at the corner of Davallen and Marion Avenue in Glenashley when a storm-water drain collapsed. Residents said they feared the road would eventually collapse, if it wasn’t tended to.

It has been exactly a month since the heavy rains caused the devastating damage across the City, and residents said they felt it was unacceptable that some of the damage had not been tended to.

However, uMhlanga ward councillor Heinz de Boer said that the City was extremely backlogged by the extent of the damage and was responding to all reported cases as soon as possible.

“All the ward councillors in the area, including myself have been running around since the day after the rains to assess the damage. I personally have a long list of e-mails and have made dozens of calls to have the issues sorted,” he said.

De Boer conceded that he too was disappointed that the crater in Glenashley had not been repaired as he believes it is a dangerous situation, but added that it was a massive project and involved input from several departments.

“It was one the worst reported storm damage cases in the ward, and its unfortunately not an overnight project. The tasks are expensive and require officials to try and relocate money that has already been budgeted to other projects,” he explained.

The councillor said he had appealed for the road to be closed off completely and is hoping that the issue will be tended to by Monday.
