Atasca robber sentenced to 10 years

The suspect was arrested after he robbed a woman at Kensington Square and was positively identified as one of the men involved in the restaurant robbery.

ONE of the men involved in the robbery of a popular Durban North restaurant has been sentenced to 10 years in prison. What’s more, Sgcina Dlamini, was arrested for another robbery at the same centre a month later. The 31-year-old suspect was arrested by an alert security guard at Kensington Square on Adelaide Thambo (Kensington) Drive after he robbed a woman in the public toilets.

According to Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS, Dlamini’s arrest led to three more suspects being detained. However, because they could not be positively identified, they were released. Detective Sipho Shezi of the station was instrumental in securing the conviction of the robber.

The suspect was a former employee of the restaurant that was there before Atasca moved in. He stabbed the manager of the restaurant and struck him over the head with a gun during the robbery. A month later he robbed a woman in the toilets, he kicked in the door, put his arms around her neck and snatched a necklace she was wearing. He also took R4 010 in cash off her which she had withdrawn and pulled off her rings.

“He was arrested after trying to get away. During interrogation he admitted to being involved in the robbery at Atasca. He was positively identified by the manager. The station commander commends detective Shezi for his sterling work in this case. We are happy justice has run its course,” he said.
