SIPHIWE Thobela, who recently disappeared in Durban North was killed while hitchhiking home on the N2, the family confirmed today.
Thobela’s niece, Melody Bruijn told the Northglen News that her aunt was struck by a vehicle on Saturday, 13 August between 6pm and 7pm.
“Her body was found at around 7.30pm. We were told by the police that the person that knocked her was the same person who had reported the incident to the police,” she said.
The family received the news of Thobela’s death on Friday last week and was asked to identify her body at the Phoenix Mortuary.
“We found out that she had been killed after a neighbour heard an announcement on a radio station, which said that police had discovered a body matching Siphiwe’s description and were searching for family members to come and identify her,” said Bruijn.
The 28-year-old leaves behind two boys aged 12 and five. They are currently in the care of Bruijn’s parents in Durban.
“When we told them that she had died they cried themselves to sleep, but I don’t think they fully understand that she will not be coming home. Every morning they wake up and ask about her,” added Bruijn.
“We want to say thank you to all the newspapers, radio stations and the community who kept their eyes open and followed up with regards to the search. We would not have been able to find her without you,” said and emotional Bruijn.
The Stanger resident’s funeral will be held on Sunday.
Thobela reportedly disappeared after locking a business premises in Broadway on the Saturday, and because of transport problems had to hitchhike her way home after she caught a taxi from Durban North to the Gateway Theatre of Shopping.
