21 arrested in uMhlanga roadblock

Police say some drivers used social media to warn other motorists about the roadblock.

A TOTAL of 21 people were arrested for drunk driving on Friday night. The roadblock was held on the M41 going towards Gateway. The Durban North SAPS who were in a joint operation with the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) said one of the drivers arrested was twice over the limit. All of the drivers were arrested and taken to the Durban North SAPS for processing. According to Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the local station, 38 drivers have been arrested in the last three roadblocks.

“What is concerning for us is most of the drivers were nabbed just after 8pm, which is relatively early in the evening. There are more people on the road at this time and we will not tolerate drunk drivers putting other motorists’ lives at risk.

“Some drivers feigned ignorance and begged for leniency. This is a warning to drivers, if you do decide to drive intoxicated, you will be arrested, no excuses. We’ve also noticed some drivers sending messages over WhatsApp to tell their friends to avoid the roadblock, our message is clear, I’d rather they tell them not to drink and drive,” he said.

Once again motorists made illegal U-turns and attempted to drive back down the one-way towards the M4.
