‘Catch me if you can’- Durban North petrol thief taunts cops

The suspect may be linked to other petrol theft cases in the area.

A MAN wanted in connection with more than R400 worth of petrol theft at a service station on Old Mill Way has dared police to ‘catch him if they can’. According to Capt Raymond Deokaran, police are close to the arrest of the man who has so far twice evaded capture. He was not so lucky with his car though. The Nissan Tida, which was used in the theft has been impounded by the Durban North SAPS.

“The theft occurred earlier this month at the service station. After filling up the tank, the suspect was asked to pay inside the convenience store because the card machine wasn’t working. He then jumped into his car and sped off. Investigations led us to a home in Ntuzuma where the suspect’s car was found. We impounded the car but there was no sign of the suspect,” said Deokaran, station spokesman.

“The people living at the property gave an address for a home in Newlands where detectives went next. We’ve tried twice to catch him but he has managed to escape on foot. We then got hold of him on a cell phone and gave him the option to pay the money back, that’s when he said ‘catch me if you can’. His arrest is imminent,” he said.

Deokaran added the suspect may be linked to other petrol thefts in the area.
