New SA number plates still on the cards

To standardise the plates officials are considering various options, such as national flags or provincial coat of arms.

THERE has been mass confusion with regards to South African proposed new number plates. This after Arrive Alive tweeted saying “What number plates nationwide are going to look like from next year.”

In 2014 Kwanele Ncalane, spokesman for the KZN Department of Transport,  first announced plans to replace the current number plate abbreviation’s, such as D, NP, NUR, with the general ‘KZN’ designation. However, the department later announced that the number plates would not change.

After the tweet was posted the department released a statement saying that the proposal was indeed still being considered.

According to the statement, the operability of the current South African number plates system is prone to abuse by unregistered manufacturers. Criminals, it said, can also easily clone number plates and use them while committing crimes.

It went on to explain that the department published the proposal in the government gazette draft Regulation Amendments on 28 January 2015 inviting the public to make objections, inputs and comments as part of the public consultation process and at the end of the departmental consultation process, the matter would be presented to Cabinet.

Through the improvements authorities are hoping to facilitate better accountability from manufacturers.
